SMART VORMSI = SMART SOLUTIONS
ABOUT VORMSI ISLAND
Vormsi is located in Western part of Estonia, between Hiiumaa Island and the mainland. It covers 92 square kilometres and is Estonia’s fourth largest island. The name Vormsi is derived from its German name “Worms” or its Swedish name “Ormsö” (both meaning “snake island”).
Historically Vormsi was inhabited by coastal Swedes. Before World War II more than 2500 people lived on the island. During the Soviet occupation Vormsi was a closed border-zone, where guests could arrive only with government permission and where it was strictly forbidden (even for the local fishermen) to go to sea. Today there are about 400 inhabitants in Vormsi island. To get to Vormsi Island one can take a ferry (trip is 12km and takes 45minutes) from Rohuküla port next to Haapsalu (108 km from Tallinn).
SMART VORMSI PROJECT
The Smart Vormsi project is driven by necessity to improve subsistence of inhabitants of peripheries and availability and quality of public services in remote places like islands. The central point of the Smart Vormsi project is to use Vormsi island as a test site for different smart solutions, initially focusing to developing smart grid consisting renewable energy micro producers (solar, wind, possibly bio), combined by smart energy management, smart e- and m-services for remote areas.
One of the most important part here are is reliable IT solution which help end consumers to get maximum gain out of the differences in energy prices during different times. In addition to solving energy issues, IT could be applied to waste management, education, transportation, environmental preservation.
In order to solve problems mentioned above, Smart Vormsi is working in cooperation with other Estonian organisations, like renewable energy associations, Tallinn Technical University, Estonian Ministry of Economics, Estonian Development Fund, Enterprise Estonia as well as private businesses.
The Smart Vormsi project includes as well the smart services development for the inhabitants and visitors of the island. These include modern GSM-based services such as:
The idea is to provide 100% of the necessary public services for the inhabitants and the tourists via modern web and GSM channels.
WHERE WE SEE OPPORTUNITIES FOR COOPERATION PROJECTS:
- Local energy management systems in islands or other determinated areas.
- Smart ICT solutions for energy management.
- Introducing green energy solutions (wind and/or solar power) for households.
- Community-based wind and solar energy management projects (energy cooperatives).
- Activities related to rising awareness about renewable energy.
- Developing renewabele energy cooperation models between local authorities, private businesses and private households.
- Smart micro grids.
